So I Quit My Job And It Feels Great

quit.gifI’ve been working at Recruiting Firm in Manhattan for over a year and a half now and I finally decided to give my two weeks notice last week. Why? I found a new a job, no simpler answer then that. Moving on to greener pastures.

I started looking for a job about two-three months ago when I realized that I was getting severely underpaid for my work (PHP/MySQL Developer with some AJAX and HTML/CSS thrown in). I got a call from a recruiting company that found my resume via Dice and they offered me a position. I told them no because I didn’t like the hourly wage they were offering me ($20 an hour) and because I really didn’t think I would get the job anyway, so I told them I’d go for $25 an hour or nothing at all (I had nothing to lose at the time).

I figured I wasn’t going to get a call back but to my almost utter dismay, I did. They said that $25 was reasonable and we scheduled an interview. So there I was, after completely putting this job on the back burner in my head, I negotiated my way up $5 an hour more because I honestly figured there was no way I was going to get it anyway (lots of competition for said ‘client’).

I go in for the interview and they basically hire me on the spot. As I walked out the door they said “We’ll see you in two weeks” with a smile. I was ecstatic. I went from getting paid terribly to making more then I ever thought possible as a college student.

This happiness was doubled once I actually started the job. The bosses are lenient, the work is extremely simple and the atmosphere is very relaxing and rewarding.

At my older job I was always stressed and had about 1,000 things flying at me at once from all directions. I couldn’t enjoy what I was doing. I had to have about three coffee’s a day just to keep from going insane. Luckily I broke free from the chains and found a new sparkling opportunity.

What’s the moral of the story? I guess if there has to be one it would be to keep your eyes open and always look for new opportunities. Don’t let a better thing pass you by just because you are too involved in the present. It’ll take some luck, some talent, and then some more luck but it will come if you want it.

Always network yourself and always look for that next advancement. Find out what people want and bring it to them. Go in with a smile on your face and a plan to do what needs to be done.
