I’ d observed that lust, greed, envy, sloth, and their pals are giving the world a good run for its money, but that nonetheless, people in general seem to get from day to day; and that we in the United States get from day to day under rather wonderful and privileged circumstances— that we are not and never have been the villains that some of the world and some of our citizens make us out to be, but that we are a confection of normal (greedy, lustful, duplicitous, corrupt, inspired— in short, human)...

There’ s no need to push (i. e., chase cold calls/ prospects) when you can motivate potential customers and business- builders to pull (i. e., they want to call you to learn more).

Sorry about being comment heavy today Leonid. I just found this site and it has great stuff.

On this topic, I think this is great advice. I spent some time in the military and everything you do is based on a plan of action. When I entered corporate America, I took the same philosophy and applied it. For every job, project or large task I take on I create an Operations Order (OPORD) which is really a mini business plan that gives clarity to the job and serves as a reminder of what needs to get done and why in a big picture format.

@coolio, your right, the plan here at cashbulge is to make money, thats why it is essential to plan first, you dont want to be losing money or at least not too much money right off the bat. Sure there are those start ups every so often, that have no planning, but as bloggers and entrepenuers it is always good to have a business plan whenever you are trying to make money. And no it doesnt have to be a full business plan. Just some preliminary coordination and understandings of yourself and your market.

@ graham: you want to make money with a blog, so why shouldn't you plan? Maybe not a full business plan, but constantly testing and doing things, you have to do this if you really wanna be successful and not rely on luck. It's a very tiring process but in the end it would have all been worth it.

I don't know. I think business plans are useful, and your time is valuable, but the kind of market research it takes to make a bullet proof business plan is beyond expensive. I think it's better to trust your gut when the investment you're making is relatively small.

Good question, however I think the answer to that lies in the second paragraph :-). Plus, that question is kind-of one sided don't you think?

In some ways, sure blogs can be simple, if you want it that way of course.

However blogs can become very complex very quickly. You should never think of your blog as a fully grown tree but rather a seed to something bigger, something always growing.

I think that's the point Dave is trying to make, the necessity to plan things out for ease of future growth and getting ahead of your competitors.
