For me, commenting on other peoples blogs gets me some regular readers and commentators. I also wrote a Post for Free Blog Comments on my Blog and started a thread for it at the Digital Point webmaster forums. In return, I got to post on several related blogs related to my niche, which gave me valuable back links, like this one and also bloggers returned the favour by adding comments on my blog.

I posted this on digitalpoint too, but I wanted to add my tip of changing your text from “No Comments” to “Comment Now” or even “Add Your Comment” instead. This to me invites users to post their own comment without giving away that there are no comments.

This is very true. I had a blog up for almost four months before people started to comment on it. I learned a few tricks to getting people to comment and what do you know, the blog is now flooded with comments. I comment on everything that I read, it helps drive traffic to my blog and it lets the writer know that someone is reading their post. I get a big head every time I see a new comment on my blog. One of these days, it will probably explode.

Comments, while helpful, are not a blog’s end-all be all. You do want a few, so follow the great advice above. But traffic is king, especially recurring traffic. Even if only a few jokers comment.
