How to Use Hype to Further Your Hype

Apple iPhone & Steve JobsWow, what a title. Let me explain it a little before I delve into this article. When you hit something big, either a Digg front page, Reddit front page or an honorable mention from another site (or anything really) and your sitting on cloud-9 receiving loads of traffic, you need to be able to take that and squeeze the most out of it. Build a bigger hype from the current one your getting. Turn profit into more profit.

Still not sure what the hell I’m talking about? Let’s take an example. Apple is ridiculously good at hyping its own hype. Take the iPhone for instance, it burned a fiery hell across the internet blogs and now, to hype the hype, a rumor has been started about a iPhone Nano. Because of this, their shares reached an all-time high this past week. That’s how its done.

When you hit that one golden miracle and get your traffic to bounce past 400%, take advantage of it! Move ad’s into higher positions and capitalize on your market. Don’t overdo it however, just make sure to optimize space, don’t leave blank space where a potential revenue making ad could be.

Make sure to post great content right afterwards because people will be looking at your homepage as well. This will help them remember your blog and they will end up coming back.

Lightning Tip: Make sure your webhost can handle high-impact traffic from social bookmarking sites. My first blog went down at least 3-4 times in one night after about 20,000 unique visitors tried piling in in a 3 hour window. You don’t want to lose valuable potential readers because the host can’t handle the capacity.

Another good way to keep those visitors coming back is e-mailing the ones that took the time out to leave some comments. For whatever reason, they showed interested. Take the time out to write a personal e-mail to each one, thanking them for their comment and showing your commitment to the development of your site. Making it seem personal will keep people coming back, no one loves the big corporations ;).
