For Starters: Traffic is the Backbone of a Successful Website
For Starters is going to be a mini-series I will be publishing for people just starting out (beginners) who are seeking guidance on monetizing and growing their websites & blogs into powerhouses. This first piece will be about the general issue of traffic for startup websites.
Lets face it, without traffic there would be no money in your pocket. The reason people make money off of advertising is because of traffic. The more traffic, the more clicks. Its all about percentages.
5,000 page impressions with a 3% click rate (at .05 cents a click) = $7.50
50,000 page impressions with a 3% click rate (at .05 cents a click) = $75.00
That little calculation should put it in perspective. Thats the difference between a meager amount of traffic trickling in and a whopping load of users everyday.
Ok, we get it, traffic is important - whats your point?
Point is that a lot of the time, people spent a huge chunk of time updating and maintaining their websites and not focusing enough on advertising or marketing their website.
You may have the next big thing. A website with superb articles and an awesome design. What good is it if people aren’t reading and enjoying your site?
Once your website design is established and you are pouring on some quality content, start spending more time getting your site known. You should focus about 20-30% on writing fresh posts (depending on what type of blog/site you run), about 20% reading relevant blogs and the other 50-60% on marketing, advertising, and driving quality traffic to your blog.
How exactly should I drive more traffic?
There are numerous things you can do to increase traffic, the biggest being social bookmarking websites such as Reddit and Digg.

Great article. I just recently started a blog and will definitely be focusing on promoting it as soon as the design is done.

Good post. I agree with the fact that traffic is the most important but I can argue that content is just as important.
Even if you have a few readers, they should be getting the most out of your writing. Good article nonetheless.

so true. Some of the big earners in the blogosphere are successful because they’ve implemented a combination of everything you’ve stated.
Traffic is key!
